Expressing faith through dance
A nice alternative to traditional "faith talks"
A few weeks ago Atticus got confirmed! In the weeks leading up to the confirmation service, students were offered an opportunity to share their faith statement (just writing that gives me nervous butterflies and brings me back to my confirmation class a zillion years ago!). Atticus wasn’t interested in speaking in front of the congregation, but he was interested in sharing his faith through dance.
The pastors and teachers were excited about the idea, and initially I thought it would be awesome if he danced live. But without doing a lot of heavy lifting in the middle of the service to clear the space and make it dance-friendly, we decided a prerecorded piece would be more appropriate.
We booked some time for him to record at the Hot House in Minneapolis. This venue is outstanding - and affordable! - if you ever need to reserve some time for individual or group dance practices. All the booking is done through an app (and I think they even take Apple Pay?). We’ve used Hot House a few times for such purposes, and loved it every time.
All that said, please enjoy what Atticus put together as an expression of his faith through dance:
I share this not just because I love Atti sharing his passion for dance, but because over the past year it has become a priority for us to focus on people and places that promote inclusivity. It would have been easy for church leadership to say “Sorry, confirmation services have always looked like this and not that.” But they welcomed this expression of faith with open hearts and minds, and we are grateful for that!
Thanks!
